About the Performance
Driven by a charged, experimental classical score composed and performed by Shelley Washington for two baritone saxophones, 2x4 (2025) operates as a conversation and a confrontation of differences and similarities. The choreography mimics the music’s urgency, juxtaposing fast-paced, curvilinear weaving with sharp, geometric sequences to articulate the interplay between opposing movement vocabularies. Captivated by the score’s electrifying impact, choreographer Kyle Abraham collaborated closely with Washington to shape a work that challenges dancers, musicians, audiences, and creators alike: How do we show up authentically, celebrate ourselves, and still make space for differences? Can we create work rooted in conflict with the hope of change? Can the conflicts we experience converge towards resolution and camaraderie?
